Ernest led Elissa to the bathroom and said softly, “I’ll shut the door but I’ll remain right here outside. If it makes you feel safer, you can lock it.”

Elissa awkwardly went about her activity, taking her time. After finishing, she turned on the tap to wash her hands when suddenly, her phone buzzed in her pocket. In the silence of the night, the ringtone sounded unusually loud.

It was her old phone, but since her time at the sanatorium, she had started using a new SIM card to keep Robin at bay. Since her stay there, her phone rarely rang. Except for Hadley, there was hardly anyone who would call her. Elissa paused, unsure. Could it be Hadley?

She clumsily reached for her phone and answered the call. “Hello?”

“Elissa.” It was Robin on the other end. “Finally, I’m able to reach you!”

Elissa froze, and her face lost all color. “Y-you…”

“What about me?” Robin’s words came through icily. “Quite bold of you, isn’t it? Found yourself a new squeeze and hid away in a sanatorium! Even went as far as changing your number! You’re quite something.”

“No, no, that’s not it…” Elissa stammered, her voice quivering with fear. “I didn’t! You’re mistaken!”

“Mistaken?” Robin’s voice dripped with scorn. “I nearly caught you both before! Elissa, just wait. Once I get you, I’ll expose you for what you are. You’re nothing but a slut. I’ll destroy you for the world to see! You remember how that feels, right? Ready for another round? Hahaha…”

“Ah!” Elissa let out a scream, hurled her phone, and dashed toward the door.

“Elissa?” Outside the door, Ernest heard her shout. “Elissa, what’s the matter?”

Worried that she could have tripped or hurt herself, Ernest quickly turned the doorknob and swung the door open.

Before he could even enter, Elissa rushed straight into him. Her face was ghostly pale, and her eyes were wide with absolute dread.

“Elissa!”

Ernest’s expression grew tense as he caught her just in time. Gently, he placed his hand on the back of her head, drawing her close into a protective hug.

Elissa whispered faintly, “It’s him, it’s him…”

Her blind eyes gaped blankly, and her body shook violently.

“Him?”

Ernest’s forehead creased with worry. He didn’t need further explanation to know.

“You mean your husband?”

“Yes!” Elissa nodded vigorously, her words a soft whisper amid her terror. “He won’t let go of me! He called me a slut… He’s coming for me! To take me back…”

Her eyes, wide open, gazed into the distance as tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Elissa!” Ernest cupped her cheeks, his eyes locked on hers with resolve. “Don’t be scared! You’re safe here. He can’t get anywhere near you. He can’t hurt you. No one can.”

Elissa hesitated upon hearing his reassurance, her teeth chattering as she shivered. “R-really?”
