Chapter 523 The Taste of Family

Chase and Jonathan stayed in the study for a long time, talking. While they were inside, Susie had already finished making the pickled radish.

It looked bright and appetizing, and Sierra couldn’t help trying a bite. Her eyes lit up.

For days now, she’d been nibbling at food without much interest. Some things she couldn’t even keep down.

But this pickled radish hit the spot. It was tangy, spicy, crisp–full of flavor. It made her want more.

As she reached for another piece, Susie quickly stopped her. “It’s too spicy to eat on its own like that. You should eat it with some rice and a thick stew–something hearty. That was my favorite way to eat it when I was pregnant. Want to try it that way?”

Sierra was already salivating. She nodded eagerly.

The butler was the happiest of all. He’d been watching Sierra struggle with her appetite for days, more anxious than anyone else.

Just then, Jonathan and Chase finished their conversation and came out.

Jonathan was heading to the kitchen.

Lately, Sierra could only stomach food if he cooked it himself.

But as soon as he stepped inside, he found her eating heartily while Susie stood by with a gentle smile on her face.

Jonathan paused.

When Susie noticed him, she grew a little flustered. “Sierra said she hadn’t been feeling well, so I made some pickled radish.”

“Thank you.”

Jonathan had been worried about Sierra’s appetite, and now that he saw her eating with gusto, even his mood lifted.

Susie was visibly moved by his thanks and waved it off quickly. “It’s nothing, really.”

Sierra jumped in. “It’s getting late. Why don’t you stay and have dinner with us?”noveldrama

Chase and Susie were more than willing.

It had been years–aside from family dinners on New Year’s Eve when the old man was around, they’d never actually sat down as a family.

Still, they looked to Jonathan. If he showed even the slightest sign of reluctance, they wouldn’t stay.

Jonathan said calmly, “Have the kitchen make a few more dishes. Invite Jose over too.”

Chase and Susie were overjoyed. Susic immediately went to call Jose, while Jonathan stayed beside Sierra. “You like this?”

“Mhm. It’s really tasty. You should try it too.”

“Alright.”

When Susie returned from making the call, Jonathan walked over. “Can you show me how to make the pickled radish?”

“Of course.”

Susie explained the process step–by–step, clearly thrilled. After she finished, she added, “If you’re busy, I can make more every couple of days and bring it over.”

Jonathan didn’t say yes or no. He wanted to try making it himself first.

He might not do a great job, and if Sierra still preferred Susie’s version, then he’d naturally have to ask her to help again.

In Jonathan’s world, nothing was more important than Sierra. Everything else could wait.

Since Wendy’s death, this was the first time Susie had ever been able to be close to Jonathan like this. She didn’t even know what to say.

She explained every step in minute detail, terrified of making even the smallest mistake.

Watching from the side, Sierra couldn’t help feeling a bit emotional. But there was nothing she could say.

Soon, Jose arrived.

That night, when the whole family finally sat around one table, everyone found it a little surreal- especially Susie, whose eyes quietly turned red.‘

Jose felt a pang in his chest too. He’d always respected Jonathan. He’d even felt jealous of him in the past. But once he learned the truth about what had happened all those years ago, all that remained was a deep sense of guilt. He finally understood why their parents had always shown Jonathan so much leniency.

The meal itself was a little awkward. Aside from Sierra and Jonathan, no one really ate much.

But Jonathan was in a surprisingly good mood. Sierra had barely eaten anything lately, but tonight she finished two bowls of rice and had plenty of soup. It made him see everyone in a better light.

He thought for a moment and said, “Do you have any other dishes that are good for someone with no appetite?”

Susie was caught off guard, then quickly realized he was talking to her. She responded right away.

“I do.”

“When I was pregnant with… back then, I had no appetite either. There was a lady who was amazing at cooking, and I learned a lot of refreshing recipes from her. I could come by and cook for Sierra every day if you’d like.”

“Wouldn’t that be too much trouble?” Sierra asked.

“Not at all,” Susie replied quickly. “I’ve got nothing to do at home anyway. It’ll be good to move around. And I can tell you all kinds of tips about pregnancy too.”
